pH and Alkalinity Levels in Newly Mixed Sea Salt

pH and Alkalinity Levels in Newly Mixed and Aging Sea Salt

Did you know how you mix your sea salt and the duration of aging your sea salt water will affect the ph and Alkalinity values?

I would like to share with every one with some interesting data that I observed about pH and alkalinity levels in newly mixed batches of sea salt.

The following information is part of my own personal testing, trails, tribulations, experiences and observations.

Did you know that a newly mixed batch of sea salt, the pH and alkalinity levels are at their highest and that  pH and alkalinity levels will slowly drop on a daily bases until used?

The rate of depletion of pH and alkalinity levels in a newly mixed batch of sea salt will depend on your mixing regimen and brand of sea salt and the sea salt formula.

I have seen different pH and alkalinity result just from different mixing practices (i.e. hand stirring, power head stirring and water pump stirring, per water volume).

Do not tank my word on it, do the following below test and verify for yourself!

I would like to see if I can get some fellow hobbyist to try an experiment using the exact following guide lines that I personally used as an standard method:

1): Make your usual denomination or make a test sample.

2): Use adequate mixing pump per your gallon amount.

(I highly recommend the following to be used as a standard method, 1 gallon / 1200 Maxi Jet power head, 5 gallons / 350 GPH water pump, 25 gallons / 1200 GPH water pump).

3): Start with your water temperature around 72 degrees to 76 degrees.

(To expedite heating filtered water, you can heat some filtered water in a pot on a stove top and or a suitable container in a microwave).

4): Add mixing pump to heated filtered water, then slowly add your dry sea salt mixture.

5): Make a ledger with date and time when you first combined water to your dry sea salt mix.

6): Keep the mixing pump running for the entire testing period.

7): Wait for the sea salt mixture to clear (Should take about 10 to 20 minutes depending on your sea salt brand).

If you are testing our Saltwater Correct Organic 2 Part Aquaculture Sea Salt Formula #2, you may add the separated bag of calcium to the rest of the sea salt mix at time of mixing.

If you are testing our Saltwater Correct Organic 2 Part Aquaculture Sea Salt Formula #1, purchased any time before 07-09-09, you can not add the calcium directly to your sea salt mix.

If you purchase our Saltwater Correct Organic 2 Part Aquaculture Sea Salt Formula #1, any time after 07-09-09, you may add the separated bag of calcium to the rest of the sea salt mix at time of mixing.

8): When your newly mixed sea salt mixture is clear, remove a portion and add to a clean food grade container and cap. At end of the testing period the saved sea salt mixture will be tested for its pH and alkalinity levels. You should see a difference of the ph and alkalinity levels from the saved (unstirred) sea salt mixture in your food grade container compared to the continually stirred sea salt mixture that you were or are testing.

9): When your newly mixed sea salt mixture is clear, test for pH and alkalinity levels.

(Log on your ledger date and time of your first test results of your pH and alkalinity levels, and mention the test kit that you used).

10): Repeat testing your pH and alkalinity levels every 12 to 24 hours. Keep the mixing pump running for the entire testing period.

(Log on your ledger date and time of each test results of your pH and alkalinity levels).

10): After your testing period, recommend 5 to 7 day testing duration time, post your result in sequence for all to read.

If anyone has any questions, e-mail me your phone number and a good time to call your or just call my cell phone number: 717-243-9545.

I do not have the time to type text responses to any questions at this time.

Always remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Thank you for your time,

Garry Elliott

The fundamentals of maintaining saltwater aquariums and maintaining all colors of coralline algae.

We ask that you do not think of your saltwater aquarium as a fish only saltwater tank, reef only saltwater tank or as a saltwater reef tank with fish. Think of your aquarium as a saltwater aquarium, period. In nature the marine animals all come from a well balanced system. This is how we maintain our saltwater aquarium water chemistry values with great success. Magnesium Values: 1250 - 1350 mg/L, Calcium Values: 380 - 450 ppm, Alkalinity Values: 3 - 5 meg/L or 8 - 11 dKH, pH Values: 8.1 - 8.4, Boron Values: 4.5 mg/L, Salinity Values:  1.026 SG or 35 PPT, Iodide Values: 0.03 – 0.06 ppm, Strontium Values: 10 and 15 mg/L. By keeping the above values stable and constant, using R/O DI filtered water, along with proper water changes, using a good protein skimmer, using carbon and or GFO media in a reactor, using  25 micron filtering bags and proper lighting for your corals. You will have a well balanced saltwater tank and you'll be able to grow and maintain good coralline growth and house any animal from the world’s reef systems and have them flourish. Try this method for 2 months and you will see a difference!  Pass It On!

Saltwater Correct product line proceeds helps us further our aquaculture program.
