Kalkwasser / Calcium Hydroxide
The Benefits of using Kalkwasser / Calcium Hydroxide in your saltwater aquarium:
I use this Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) in conjunction with our Calcium Chloride in my saltwater aquaculture systems. In my opinion the main benefit of using Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is that it helps to maintain the pH values with a side benefit of calcium. Even the most inexperienced hobbyist can easily use Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser). Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is the same as the original European Method that has never been equaled for calcium addition to a marine tank! It requires a little more work, but so does anything that is really worthwhile! Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is extremely beneficial for corals, coralline algae and many reef inhabitants. It also helps raise the pH level, which is needed in a marine and reef environment. It might come to a surprise that Kalkwasser, which is German for lime, does not contain any lime at all. The name comes from the main compound used: Calcium Hydroxide. Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is in powdered form. Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is mixed with R/O water, using the clear liquid solution to drip into your marine aquarium sump. Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) has a pH of about 12.0 to 12.5. Knowing about the high pH of Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) , it is essential to monitor the pH level while adding it. Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is best introduced in the evening since pH levels vary throughout the day, measuring their lowest in the morning. Adding Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) in the evening will therefore have less influence in the beginning and helps the system to adjust better and to avoid possible pH “shocks” (as in a to sudden pH increase). Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is extremely pure and meets American Water Works and Water Chemicals Codex Specifications. This means it's pure enough to be used in low-levels as potable water additive by water municipalities. The best way to introduce Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) is as top off water for the aquarium. As pure water evaporates over time, adding the Calcium Hydroxide (A.K.A. Kalkwasser) clear solution rather than the milky liquid to drip into your marine aquarium. The clear solution will replenish the much needed calcium and pH buffer. When you can't maintain you calcium levels with Kalkwasser, you need to use some Calcium Chloride, Saltwater Correct Calcium Chloride purity is (Min) 94% (Max) 97%. When using calcium chloride to raise your calcium level, it's recommended to only raise your calcium by 30 ppm daily, until your reach your desired calcium level. Heavy prolong use of Kalkwasser my lower your magnesium levels, monitor your magnesium level and adjust accordingly. Magnesium levels in natural seawater is between 1250 ppm to 1350 ppm. Low magnesium levels will affect your calcium and alkalinity values. Dosage: Figure out how much water evaporation your system has in a 24 hour period. Start out adding 1 teaspoon of Kalkwasser per gallon of RO/DI filtered water and use the clear liquid for your top-off water daily. Monitor your pH, calcium and magnesium values and adjust accordingly.

The secret of growing and maintaining all colors of coralline algae.
We ask that you do not think of your saltwater aquarium as a fish only saltwater tank, reef only saltwater tank or as a saltwater reef tank with fish. Think of your aquarium as a saltwater aquarium, period. In nature the marine animals all come from a well balanced system. This is how we maintain our saltwater aquarium water chemistry values with great success.
Magnesium Values: 1250 - 1350 mg/L, Calcium Values: 380 - 450 ppm, Alkalinity Values: 3 - 5 meg/L or 8 - 11 dKH, pH Values: 8.1 - 8.4, Borate/Boron Values: 4.5 mg/L, Salinity Values: 1.026 SG or 35 PPT, Iodide Values: 0.03 – 0.06 ppm, Strontium Values: 10 and 15 mg/L. By keeping the above values stable and constant, using R/O DI filtered water, along with proper water changes, using a good protein skimmer, using carbon in a reactor, using 25 micron filtering bags and proper lighting for your corals. You will have a well balanced saltwater tank and you'll be able to grow and maintain good coralline growth and house any animal from the world’s reef systems and have them flourish. Try this method for 2 months and you will see a difference! Pass It On!
